Chitosan Oligosaccharide Approved as Novel Food Ingredient in China

On May 15, 2014, the National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People's Republic of China promulgated 

the announcement No. 6, 2014 on Approving 6 Ingredients including Chitosan Oligosaccharide as Novel Food Ingredients. 

Details as follows:


According to relevant regulations of Food Safety Law of the People's Republic of China and  Management Regulations 

on Security Review of the Novel Food Ingredients, chitosan oligosaccharide, Silybum marianum Seed oil, Chmonathus 

salicifolius S.Y.H, Male flower of Eucommia ulmoides, Pediococcus acidilactici and Pediococcus Pentosaceus have been 

granted novel food ingredients approval. Production and business operation above food ingredients should comply with 

the stipulations of relevant laws, regulations and standards.

Chitosan Oligosaccharide (COS) is the degraded products of chitosan by enzymatic hydrolysis. The greater solubility, low 

viscosity and positive physiological effects of COS have attracted the interest of many researchers to utilize COS replacing 

chitosan. Recent advances have insight into the health benefits of COS, possessing several beneficial biological effects 

including lowering blood cholesterol, lowering high blood pressure, protective effects against infections, controlling arthritis, 

improvement of calcium uptake, and enhancing antitumor properties.
