More than 500 tons of chitosan is used in water treatment in Japan every year, and the US Environmental Protection Agency also uses chitosan as a purification product for drinking water. The mechanism of chitosan treatment of aquaculture water is that its amino group and hydroxyl group can form chelating ligands with metal ions in aquaculture wastewater. The colloid adsorbs the suspended solids in the aquaculture water and precipitates them, thereby purifying the aquaculture water. The use of chitosan can effectively adsorb or capture metal ions in the solution, and can also adsorb suspended solids and excess organic matter, and will not produce any toxic effects on aquaculture objects. Experiments have shown that 50-100 g/m3 of chitosan is added to the aquaculture water. The test results show that the water body with chitosan is more transparent than the water without chitosan. Chitosan purifies the water quality and prevents the water quality from deteriorating.
